Hi! I'm Jacques, a quantum physicist.
An Australian, I studied in Melbourne and received my PhD from the University of Queensland. My work has taken me all over the world; nowadays I'm based at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil.
In my research I try to make sense out of the notoriously confusing world of quantum mechanics. This blog is mainly a place where I can practice writing about this difficult problem for a general audience, and also a place for me to express thoughts that just don't fit in any academic journal -- because they are too small, too big, too unpolished, too tentative, too interdisciplinary, or maybe just too wild.
In my career I have studied many different interpretations of quantum theory. My current favourite interpretation is QBism and I work closely with the QBism group led by Prof. Chris Fuchs at the University of Massachusetts, Boston.

What does soil have in common with the vacuum of space time, apart from being dark and mysterious? Read on to find out!
Can we use "quantum random access codes" (QRACs) to write algorithms that use memory more efficiently? Who the heck knows.
In which I make poems out of things people said in lectures.
In which I attempt to explain the difference.
